Elementary Curriculum

Language Arts
A multi-sensory, integrated curriculum of phonics, reading, grammar, writing and spelling is taught primarily using a program called "Literacy by Design" as well as other programs. It focuses on the many ways children learn by using visual, aural, oral, singing, rhythm, and movement aids. As their skills increase, literature books and writing projects are introduced as well as an increased focus on reading for comprehension and the exploration of different styles of writing. Reading is emphasized both at home and in the classroom. Weekly trips to the library encourage children to choose books outside of their realm of study. Writing skills include narratives, descriptive summaries, expository papers, and persuasive writing. The children will also be introduced to literary discussions using compare and contrast methods.

Mathematics
Math is introduced using "Everyday Math", which develops mathematical understanding using manipulative and real-life math experiences. Then, continuing through direct instruction and discovery, children will progressively learn and apply: addition/subtraction, pictographs, place value, money, time, calendar, measurement, geometry, fractions, bar graphs, area, perimeter, probability, estimation, multiplication, division, decimals, statistics, ratio, percentages, algebraic expressions, algebraic equations, and problem solving.

Social Studies
Social Studies is taught by project approach and research. Children participate in planning, discovering, researching, and sharing. Starting on a local level and expanding to United States and World Geography/History, students will learn about maps, states, community, globes, government, presidents, topography, habitats, explorers, and current events. Many of these topics are reinforced through field trips and community resource people.

Science
Taught by projects and research, different learning styles are accommodated through discovery and experimentation. Topics of study include good health habits, plants, water cycle, equinox, solar system, animal habits, weather/meteorology, seasons, body systems, space, insects, and amphibians.

Related Arts
Elementary students have a variety of related arts classes each week to round out the development of their whole being. These include Spanish, art, music, technology, and physical education. Read more here.
