Welcome from the Lower School Principal
Welcome to the The Village School’s Lower School Division! I am thankful and proud to be a part of this dynamic school community. As the name of the school implies, TVS is a village comprised of students, teachers, parents, and support staff. The social, emotional, and academic well-being of the students is a priority therefore “the village” works together as a team to help the students develop and grow. The teachers here take the time to build trusting relationships with the students using the Responsive Classroom approach. We focus on the strong relationship between academic success and social-emotional learning (SEL). This approach empowers our teachers and staff to create a caring, nurturing, supportive, happy, engaging, and safe learning community where all students feel confident to participate, collaborate, stretch their imaginations, and take risks that inspire a love of learning in all involved.
Every day, as I travel throughout our campus, I am reminded of these joyful relationships in the greetings given and received by students and teachers alike as well as the support given to one another. Acts of kindness are also prevalent and very much a part of the culture here at TVS which is rooted in our Christ Skills. Our students have a desire to reach out to others to offer a helping hand or a kind word both in and outside of school. These skills, including responsibility, effort, caring, and integrity, to name a few, give students the necessary tools to build good character and to be successful in life. Our Christ Skills are embraced, taught, and modeled by our teachers on a daily basis and highlighted in chapel every week.
We set the bar high for academic success and have a strong and rigorous curriculum using the S.T.E.A.M. philosophy supported by a talented team of highly trained teachers who use Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences to present the materials to foster understanding. We also have an excellent support staff which include teacher assistants, an educational technology expert, a science coach, a challenge coach, and related arts teachers (music, art, library, physical education, Spanish, Jr. Engineering). They work in collaboration with the classroom teachers to help prepare the students to become innovative entrepreneurs, effective collaborators, problem solvers, creative and critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and leaders in order to become meaningful contributors to society.
I have been blessed with a long career in education that started three decades ago in New York and have loved every minute of it. I’ve been a part of TVS since 2004. Up until 2016, I was classroom teacher. I am thrilled for the opportunity to lead the lower school into the future. Connecting with the students, their families, and my colleagues have always been a priority and will continue to be. Once I found and experienced The Village School, I knew I had found my home. I am proud of our highly trained teachers and excellent support staff. They care for, nurture, and treasure the precious gifts you entrust to us- your children. Please schedule a tour of our school to see, feel, and experience the beautiful culture here at TVS that makes us special.
I love working with our students and having the opportunity to support the teachers, staff, and parents in providing the best educational experience for our students. It takes a village…
